New Communication Technologies and the Future of our Relationships.

Communication
Communication

Communication determines the new technology and the future of our relationship. Today, we are going through yet another social transition that has been changing society over time.

To understand this process, it is necessary to understand the changes in society itself, in its way of thinking, relating, and communicating, as well as the evolution of the devices that caused part of these changes.

It can be seen, then, that social transformation is linked to technological transformations that society appropriates to develop and maintain itself.

It is increasingly noticed, in different environments, such as home, work, and school, the modernization of new communication technologies and their advances influencing the behavior of human beings and interfering in their relationship with others.

New communication technologies: new behaviors

New practices and concepts emerged and everything changed in a short period. This new way of seeing the world can be called the digital information age or the virtual communication age.

It can be said that information is, for contemporary society, the basis of knowledge, economic, political, social life, and relationships. Therefore, the exchange of information is essential to the global population, and, naturally, technologies follow the trend of improving this communication, making it even more dynamic and much faster.

On the other hand, the human being, who is by nature a social being, may end up putting aside his creative capacity and becoming a machine cog, manipulated by the fascination of the entire technological arsenal that has been gaining new followers everywhere on the planet. This is called digital mass communication.

Technologies are changing the way people communicate and inform themselves. With the accessibility of the internet and mobile devices, such as a cell phone in your pocket or a tablet in your backpack, communication circulates at an impressive speed.

It is possible, for example, through a WhatsApp group, to make a statement to numerous people at the same time or share something on your Facebook page that reaches thousands of users in a few hours.

Without a doubt, there has been an exponential growth in the acquisition of devices and the advancement of technologies, especially with the massification of the internet.

Today we have access to information from everywhere. Communication has become faster, more dynamic, and more interesting, however, people can end up distancing themselves from each other, isolating themselves, and, at times, being even manipulated by technological innovations.

Communication increasingly instrumentalized
The interfaces in our surroundings demonstrate how we are connecting and relating to each other through information and communication.

More broadly, interfaces are language symbols, which can be abstract or physical, enabling our communication or some concrete information or object, sender and receiver, sign and signifier.

Facebook, for example, is an interface that enables personal relationships and communication with your friends. Public offices and their services are communication interfaces between the people, the government, and power. Your cell phone is an interface that allows you to communicate with the other end of the line, and so on.

The fact is, when it comes to technological evolution and communication, the future has already begun. New communication technologies are reinventing the way we communicate, gradually raising us to a level of human connectivity never before experienced.

With the emergence of new technologies and tools, communication becomes increasingly contextualized and fragmented. See examples:

  • LinkedIn is a more formal channel, ideal for work;
  • Facebook is a less formal tool, ideal for friends;
  • Snapchat is for those closest friends;
  • a text message is for something faster or more urgent;
  • Slack is for work teams;
  • Twitter is to broadcast a thought or opinion publicly;
  • Skype is ideal for conversations over long distances;
  • phone calls are to something really important or people closest to you.
Despite the numerous tools that facilitate communication, interaction is often more pleasurable when there is contact with each other, face to face. After all, this approach allows us to observe the other's facial expressions, listen to the intonation of the voice and feel their presence welcoming and being welcomed, for example.

So current relationships are something to reflect on. Experts recommend, for example, that for important decisions where communication is crucial or there is a sensitive issue to deal with, such as raising capital, breaking up with someone, or closing a deal, it is more prudent to do it in person.

New technologies change communication in the future
New technologies promise to create a more meaningful and intimate way to improve communication. Over the next ten years, three key areas will be part of our communication.

Telepresence

Suitable Technologies or Telepresence Robot, have you heard? This new technological modality is called “Skype on wheels”, but it is more than that. Telepresence robots such as Beam represent the future generation of face-to-face communication, allowing you to participate and move as if you were physically present.

Virtual Worlds

A great innovation that is about to happen in communication will allow you to be with one or more people, not in a present form, but in a high-resolution virtual world, in what would be a very similar replica, dialoguing and sharing as if it were real.

Brain-Computer Interface

The most advanced form of communication will be consolidated in the next decade: it is the Brain-Computer Interface or simply BCI — Brain-Computer Interface, in the English language.

This modality concerns the ability to connect our mind to the computer and vice versa, allowing for a more intimate communication link. And this potential is not restricted to manipulating machines with our thoughts but opens up possibilities for establishing direct communication with another person's brain-mind—mind communication or BBI. It would even be possible to understand the feelings and thoughts of the person you are communicating with.

The digital transformation has caused changes almost in a general way in all of society, in the most diverse sectors, be it in the economic, industrial, educational, health area, in short, the digital age is now a reality.

How should all these sectors react to this fact? The answer may lie in using the most effective way of communicating. Everyone must take ownership of new forms of communication to establish links with their audience, favoring dialogue and, consequently, good business results and, above all, good relationships.

Therefore, it is important to think about new communication technologies, the quality of our relationships, and the way we communicate, after all, we are social beings and communication is essential for life in society.
